매목 수리과에 속하는 조류이다. 몸길이는 50~56cm이다. 암수 형태가 유사하며, 흰색 굵은 눈썹선과 두꺼운 검은색 눈선, 노란색 홍채가 특징이다. 머리부터 등, 날개 윗면, 꼬리는 진한 청회색이고 가슴과 배에는 흰색에 흑갈색 가는 가로줄 무늬가 있다. 날개는 짧으며 폭이 넓고, 날 때 보이는 긴 꼬리가 특징이다. 산야, 평지, 하천변 등에서 볼 수 있으며, 번식기에는 비교적 깊은 산림에 서식한다. 암수 함께 생활하거나 단독으로 생활하며 먹이는 주로 꿩, 비둘기, 오리 등과 같이 날아다니는 조류를 추적해 잡아먹으며 토끼, 청설모, 다람쥐 같은 작은 포유류도 먹는다. 큰 나무의 가지에 나뭇가지를 쌓아 접시 모양의 둥지를 지상으로부터 4~8m 높이에 만든다. 5월~6월경 옅은 푸른색의 알을 2~4개 낳는다. 우리나라에서 겨울에 흔하게 관찰되고 번식도 하며, 이동시기에는 서해 도서 지역에서 많이 관찰된다. 세계적으로는 일본, 유럽, 북아메리카, 시베리아, 중국에 분포한다. 국내에는 겨울철 전역의 산야, 평지, 하천변 등에서 볼 수 있으며, 번식기에는 비교적 깊은 산림에 서식한다. 이동 시기에는 서해 도서 지역인 소청도, 어청도, 홍도, 흑산도 등에서 비교적 많은 개체가 관찰된다. [2]
