참새목 까마귀과에 속하는 조류이다. 몸길이는 33cm 정도이다. 등과 배는 분홍빛을 띤 갈색이다. 허리의 흰색과 꽁지의 검은색이 대조적이고, 날개덮깃에는 청색과 검은색 가로띠가 있다. 날개에는 흰색 무늬가 뚜렷하다. 세로무늬가 있는 정수리의 깃을 세워서 낮은 댕기를 이룬다. 폭넓은 검은색의 뺨 선이 있다. 나무 위에서 생활하고 먹이를 숨겨 두는 습성이 있다. 날 때는 날개를 천천히 퍼덕여 날아오른 뒤 대체로 파도 모양을 그리며 난다. 경계할 때에는 맹렬하게 울며 다른 짐승의 소리를 흉내 내기도 한다. 낙엽활엽수림과 혼효림에 둥지를 틀고 4-6월에 5-6개의 알을 낳는다. 북위 40~60°의 유럽과 아시아에 분포한다. 한국의 전역에서 번식하는 흔한 텃새이다. 나무 위에서 생활하고 먹이를 숨겨 두는 습성이 있다. 날 때는 날개를 천천히 퍼덕여 날아오른 뒤 대체로 파도 모양을 그리며 난다. 경계할 때에는 맹렬하게 울며 다른 짐승의 소리를 흉내 내기도 한다. 낙엽활엽수림과 혼효림에 둥지를 틀고 4-6월에 5-6개의 알을 낳는다. [2]
