Hericium caput-medusae (Bull.) Pers. 1797 (노루머리)
썩은 목재에 나는 버섯으로 전체의 크기는 길이 8~22cm, 폭 5~14cm이다. 생김새는 계란형 또는 머리 모양이다. 갓의 윗면은 가늘고 짧은 털이 빽빽하게 덮여 있으며 아랫면에 수염 모양의 7~50mm의 침상 돌기가 늘어져 있다. 초기에는 백색이나 나중에는 담황색 또는 담갈색으로 변한다. 조직이 부드러운 목재부후균이다. 건조하면 스펀지 모양이 되며 물을 빨아들인다. 가을철, 살아 있는 떡갈나무, 너도밤나무 등 활엽수 상처 부위나 고사목 위에 발생한다. 한반도 전역에 자생하며 동아시아, 유럽, 북미에도 분포한다. 버섯 모양이 노루의 궁둥이와 비슷하다하여 국명이 유래하였다.
