십각목 가재과에 속하는 갑각류로 몸길이는 약 50mm, 갑각 길이는 29-32mm이다. 몸은 붉은색을 띤다. 이마뿔은 넓고 테를 두른 것처럼 보인다. 다리는 5쌍인데, 제1가슴다리가 가장 크고 억세다. 차가운 물이 흐르고 낙엽과 돌이 많은 산간 계류에 살며, 낙엽이나 바위 밑에서 숨어 지내다 밤에 활동한다. 전국에 서식하며, 세계적으로는 중국에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]

낙엽과 바위가 많은 산간 계류의 차가운 물(평균 15도)에 서식한다. 밤에 활동하며 낮에는 낙엽이나 바위 밑에서 숨어 지낸다. 3~4월에 산란하여 암컷의 복부에 품고 지내다가 5~6월에 부화한다. [3]
