바닷가 산지에서 나는 낙엽 활엽 떨기나무로 높이 2~4m 정도로 자라는 낙엽 활엽 떨기나무이다. 나무껍질은 평활하며 가지는 회백색이고 털이 없다. 잎은 어긋나며 잎몸은 도란상 타원형 또는 도란상 긴 타원형이고, 잎끝은 부드럽게 뾰족하고 밑은 원형이거나 심장 모양, 길이 3.5~20cm로서 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 잎자루는 길이 1~3cm다. 꽃은 암수딴그루로서 5~6월에 새 가지의 잎겨드랑이에서 1개의 꽃자루가 자라고 끝에 3개의 꽃싸개잎이 있으며 그 위에 길이 1~2cm의 둥근 꽃주머니(화낭, 花囊)가 있다. 꽃은 이 꽃주머니에 싸여 있어 볼 수 없다. 꽃주머니가 7~8월에 자라서 열매 은화과(隱花果)로 되며 9~10월에 자흑색으로 익는다. 우리나라 경상남도, 전라남도, 남해안 섬 지역 및 제주도에서 자생하며 일본 혼슈 이남, 타이완, 베트남, 중국 남부 등에 분포한다. 조경수로 심으며, 어린잎과 열매를 식용한다.
