Morus alba var. mongolica Bureau
석회암 지대의 산기슭, 산지 사면에서 높이 7~8m쯤 자라는 낙엽 활엽 작은큰키나무이다. 나무껍질은 회갈색이고 고르지 않게 터지며, 햇가지는 갈색이고 껍질눈은 긴 타원형이다. 잎은 어긋나며, 넓은 난형 또는 긴 타원형으로 길이 8~17cm, 폭 4~9cm, 밑부분은 심장 모양, 끝은 꼬리 모양으로 뾰족해지며, 가장자리는 날카로운 톱니 모양으로 톱니 끝에 3mm 정도의 바늘 같은 가시가 있다. 잎자루는 길이 2~3cm다. 꽃은 4~5월에 암수딴그루에 핀다. 수꽃은 밑으로 처지는 이삭꽃차례에 달리며, 꽃받침잎은 4장, 수술은 4개다. 암꽃은 꽃받침잎 4장, 암술은 1개, 암술대는 짧다. 열매는 집합과, 둥글며, 6~7월에 검게 익는다. 우리나라 중부 이북에 나며, 몽골, 중국 동북부 등에 분포한다. 국내에 분포하는 뽕나무속 식물 중에서 잎 가장자리의 톱니 끝이 바늘처럼 뾰족해지고 잎 양면에 털이 거의 없으므로 구분된다. 잎은 누에먹이로 쓰고, 열매를 식용한다. 나무껍질은 염료로 쓴다. 잎과 열매는 약재로 쓴다. 몽골뽕나무라고도 한다.
