산기슭이나 산 중턱의 습한 곳에 자라는 낙엽 작은큰키나무이다. 높이는 5~6m, 나무껍질은 짙은 회색이며, 가지는 퍼지고 모가 나며, 털이 있다가 없어진다. 어린가지는 연한 털이 있으나, 곧 떨어진다. 잎은 타원형 또는 넓은 타원형, 길이 3~9cm, 폭 2~4cm, 끝은 뾰족하고, 밑은 둥글며, 가장자리에 성긴 톱니가 있다. 뒷면에는 흰 털이 많다. 꽃은 3~5월에 피는데 수꽃이삭은 타원형으로 길이 2~3cm, 폭 1.8cm, 수술은 2개, 노란색이며, 밑부분까지 서로 떨어져 있고, 털이 없다. 암꽃이삭은 긴 타원형으로 길이 3~4cm이다. 열매는 삭과, 긴 타원형이고, 4~6월에 익는데 털이 있다. 우리나라 제주도, 울릉도를 제외한 전역에 자라며, 러시아, 일본, 중국, 유라시아 등에 분포한다. 떡버들과 비슷하지만, 잎은 타원형 또는 넓은 타원형이며, 뒷면에 흰 털이 남아 있고, 수술대 아래에 털이 없으며, 암술머리와 암술대 사이에 턱이 지는 것이 다르다. 호랑버들과 비교해서 잎이 긴 타원형 또는 넓은 피침형인 것을 좀호랑버들(=긴잎호랑버들)이라고 한다. 관상용, 제방 보호용으로 식재하고, 꽃이삭을 약용한다.
