층층나무목 층층나무과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 산지의 계곡 주변에서 흔히 자라 키 20m에 달하는 낙엽활엽 큰키나무이다. 수피는 어두운 회갈색이며, 어린 가지는 녹색이거나 적색을 띤다. 잎은 호생하고, 상면은 녹색, 하면은 백색이며, 엽병은 적색을 띠고, 털이 없다. 엽신은 넓은 난형 또는 타원상 난형이며, 엽선은 급한 점첨두, 엽저는 원저이고, 상면에는 어릴 때 누운 털이 있으나 점차 없어지며, 하면에는 누운 털이 있다. 측맥은 5-8쌍이다. 꽃은 5~6월에 지름 5-12cm인 산방화서에 달리고, 화경에는 잔털이 밀생하거나 털이 없다. 악통은 난형이고, 표면에 백색 복모가 있고, 악편은 선단부가 예두이다. 화판은 백색이며, 좁은 장타원형 또는 넓은 피침형이고, 표면에 누운 털이 있다. 열매는 핵과로 8~9월에 흑색으로 익으며, 종자는 갈색으로 편구형이며 지름 4-5mm로 선단부에 구멍이 있다. 이 종은 말채나무에 비해 측맥이 6~9쌍으로 많고, 곰의말채나무에 비해 잎이 어긋나고 가지 끝에 모여 달리므로 구별된다. 공원수, 조경수로 심으며, 목재는 기구재, 조각재, 합판재로 이용한다. 꺼그렁나무, 물깨금나무라고도 한다. 우리나라 전역에 자라며, 네팔, 타이완, 미얀마, 부탄, 인도 북부, 일본, 중국 등 동북아시아 온대지역에 넓게 분포한다.
