산지, 고도가 낮은 지대, 길가 햇볕이 잘 들고 습기가 많은 토양에서 흔하게 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 전체에 털이 많다. 줄기는 곧추서며, 높이 70~250cm다. 뿌리잎은 줄기잎과 비슷하다. 줄기잎은 깃꼴겹잎이거나 작은잎 3장으로 된 겹잎, 넓은 삼각형, 길이 20~70cm, 폭 15~50cm, 잎자루 밑이 넓어져서 줄기를 감싼다. 꽃은 6~8월에 피는데 가지 끝과 줄기 끝의 겹산형꽃차례에 달리며, 흰색이다. 작은꽃차례는 20~30개, 각각에 꽃이 15~30개 달리며, 지름 2.5cm쯤이다. 작은꽃자루는 길이가 일정하지 않다. 꽃싸개잎은 없거나 3~7장이고, 일찍 떨어진다. 작은꽃싸개잎은 5~9장, 선형, 작은꽃자루의 길이와 비슷하다. 꽃차례 가장자리에 피는 꽃의 꽃잎은 안쪽 것보다 2~3배 크며, 그중 바깥쪽 2개는 더욱 크고 끝이 깊게 2갈래로 갈라진다. 열매는 분과이며, 9~10월에 익는데 납작하다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국, 몽골, 일본, 러시아 등에 분포한다. 이 종의 꽃은 겹산형꽃차례에 흰색으로 피며, 가장자리의 꽃이 가장 크고 안쪽으로 갈수록 작아지며, 꽃잎의 크기도 각각 다른 점에서 과 내 모든 종과 구별된다. 어린순은 나물로 먹는다.
