전국의 산과 들에 자라는 한해살이풀로 다른 식물의 가지에 기생하는 식물이며 주로 콩과 식물에 기생한다. 세포 내에 광합성을 수행하는 엽록체가 없어 식물체가 노란색을 띤다. 뿌리는 싹이 틀 때는 있지만 다른 식물에 붙으면 없어진다. 줄기는 0.3~0.4mm 정도로 매우 가늘며 덩굴지어 다른 풀과 나무에 붙는데 길이 50cm쯤이다. 잎은 비늘 같으며 삼각형 난형이고 어긋난다. 꽃은 7~8월경에 피는데 가지에 몇 개씩 모여 달리며 흰색이다. 꽃부리는 짧은 종 모양이며 끝이 5갈래로 갈라지고 안쪽에 2갈래로 갈라진 비늘조각이 있다. 수술은 5개이며 꽃부리 갈래에 어긋난다. 암술대는 2개다. 열매는 삭과이며 납작한 구형, 8월에 익으며, 껍질이 얇고 밑부분에 꽃받침이 달려 있다. 종자는 넓은 난형, 겉이 밋밋하고 황백색이다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국, 일본, 동남아시아, 오스트레일리아 등지에 분포한다. 실새삼은 꽃부리통이 열매보다 짧고, 꽃 안쪽의 작은 부속체가 끝부분이 두 갈래로 갈라지는 반면, 갯실새삼은 꽃부리통이 열매의 윗부분을 제외하고 완전히 싸고 있으며, 부속체는 가장자리가 술 모양으로 잘게 갈리므로 다르다. 미국실새삼은 열매가 실새삼과 비슷하나 부속체가 여러 번 갈리는 점에서 구분한다.
