깊은 산의 골짜기나 냇가에 자라는 큰키나무이다. 높이 30m, 지름 2m까지 자란다. 수피는 연한갈색이다. 잎은 마주나며, 홀수 1회 깃꼴겹잎으로 작은잎은 보통 9~11장이다. 작은잎은 타원상 피침형으로 길이 8~22cm, 폭 2~8cm, 끝은 뾰족하다. 잎 뒷면 맥 위에 털이 있고, 밑부분에 갈색 털이 있다. 꽃은 5월에 암수딴그루에 피며, 묵은 가지의 잎겨드랑이에서 나온 겹총상꽃차례에 달린다. 꽃잎은 없다. 열매는 시과, 장타원상 피침형, 길이 2.5~4cm이다. 우리나라 전역에 자생한다. 러시아, 일본, 중국에 분포한다. 목재는 가구재, 건축재, 선박재로 쓰고, 껍질은 약용한다.
