Gardenia jasminoides f. grandiflora Makino
꼭두선이목 꼭두선이과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 줄기는 곧추서고 높이 1~3m이다. 가지가 갈라지며, 어린가지는 녹색이고, 미세한 털이 많다. 잎은 마주나거나 3장이 돌려나며, 긴 타원형 또는 타원형으로 길이 5~12cm, 폭 2~5cm, 가장자리가 밋밋하다. 잎 양면에 털이 없고, 두꺼운 가죽질이며, 윤기가 난다. 잎자루는 짧다. 꽃은 6~7월에 가지 끝에 1개씩 피고 지름 5~6cm이며, 흰색으로 향기가 강하다. 꽃받침은 6~7갈래로 갈라지며, 갈래조각은 가늘고 길다. 꽃부리는 7갈래로 깊게 갈라진다. 수술은 6~7개이다. 열매는 장과로 길이 3~4cm, 세로로 6~7개의 능선이 있고, 9~10월에 노란빛이 도는 붉은색으로 익는다. 중국에서 도입하여 관상용으로 심어 기르던 것이 야생화하여 숲 가장자리, 계곡과 산기슭, 들판 등에서 자라는 상록성 떨기나무이다. 잎과 꽃부리의 크기 등에 따라 다양한 원예품종이 있다. 꽃은 관상용으로, 뿌리와 열매는 식용하고, 염료로도 사용한다. 치자, 좀치자, 겹치자나무라고도 한다. 우리나라 남부지방에서 식재하며, 베트남, 인도, 인도차이나, 일본, 중국, 타이완, 태국 등에 분포한다. 전통지식(문헌) 문헌명 전통지식(문헌)조사내용 번역문 용도 열람등급 지봉유설 본초(本草)에서 지자(支子)라고 하고 일명 목단(木丹)이라 하였다. 꽃은 흰 빛깔로 여섯 개가 피는데, 매우 향기롭다. 불서에서 이른바 담복(薝蔔)이 이것이다. 지금에는 산치자를 약으로 쓴다. 이것이 곧 담복이다. 동파의 시에 보면 "여섯꽃 담복은 금사이 부처일세"라고 하였다. 증단백은 말하기를 "치자꽃을 선우(禪友)라 한다". 관산용 비공개 향약집성방 맛은 쓰고 성질은 차며(몹시 차다고도 한다) 독이 없다. 오장의 사기와 위 속의 열기를 없애고 얼굴이 벌개지는 것, 주포, 주사비, 백와, 적라, 창양 등과 눈이 피지면서 달고 아픈 것, 가슴과 명치, 대소장에 열이 심한 것, 속이 안타깝게 답답한 것 등을 치료한다. 일명 목단, 월도라고도 하며 음력 9월에 열매를 따서 햇볕에 말린다. 옥지(양척촉)의 독을 푼다. 치자에는 2∼3가지 종류가 있는데 조금씩 다르다. 7모가 난 것이 제일 좋은 것인데 서리가 내린 뒤에 딴다. 지금은 물들이는 데 쓰고 약으로는 드물게 쓴다.(도은거) 산치자는 자충독을 풀며 열독풍을 없애고 5림과 중악을 치료하며 소변을 잘 누게 하고 5가지 황달을 낫게 하며 눈을 밝게 한다. 또한 열을 내리고 역병, 소갈증, 입이 마르는 것, 눈이 충혈된 것, 붓는 것 등을 치료한다. (약성론) 치자나무는 키가 7∼8자나 되고 잎은 추리잎 비슷하나 두텁고 굳다. 또는 저포자 비슷하다. 음력 2∼3월에 흰꽃이 피는데 꽃판은 6개이며 몹시 향기롭다. 민간에서는 서역첨복이라고 한다. 여름과 가을에 가자같은 열매가 달리는데 익지 않은 것은 푸르고 익으면 누렇게 된다. 속씨는 빨간데 이것이 약으로 쓰이는 치자이다. 의학책에 월도라고 한 것도 이것이다. 껍질이 얇으면서 둥글고 작으며 열매에 7∼9개의 모가 난 것이 좋은 것이다. 크고 긴 것은 복시치자라 하는데 물들이는 데 쓰고 약으로는 쓰지 못한다. (도경) 맛은 박하여 가라앉고 냄새는 후하며 가볍고 맑아 위로 떠오르므로 양중지음에 속한다. 4가지 작용이 있다. 첫째는 심경에 있는 사열을 없애는 것이고 둘째는 번조증을 멈추는 것이며 셋째는 상초의 허열을 없애는 것이고 넷째는 풍열을 치료하는 것이다. 이것이 가벼워서 떠오르는 것은 폐를 상징하고 붉은 색은 화를 상징하기 때문에 폐속의 화를 사한다고도 하였다. (약성론) 치자나무는 키가 7∼8자나 되고 잎은 추리잎 비슷하나 두텁고 굳다. 또는 저포자 비슷하다. 음력 2∼3월에 흰꽃이 피는데 꽃판은 6개이며 몹시 향기롭다. 민간에서는 서역첨복이라고 한다. 여름과 가을에 가자같은 열매가 달리는데 익지 않은 것은 푸르고 익으면 누렇게 된다. 속씨는 빨간데 이것이 약으로 쓰이는 치자이다. 의학책에 월도라고 한 것도 이것이다. 껍질이 얇으면서 둥글고 작으며 열매에 7∼9개의 모가 난 것이 좋은 것이다. 크고 긴 것은 복시치자라 하는데 물들이는 데 쓰고 약으로는 쓰지 못한다. (도경) 맛은 박하여 가라앉고 냄새는 후하며 가볍고 맑아 위로 떠오르므로 양중지음에 속한다. 4가지 작용이 있다. 첫째는 심경에 있는 사열을 없애는 것이고 둘째는 번조증을 멈추는 것이며 셋째는 상초의 허열을 없애는 것이고 넷째는 풍열을 치료하는 것이다. 이것이 가벼워서 떠오르는 것은 폐를 상징하고 붉은 색은 화를 상징하기 때문에 폐속의 화를 사한다고도 하였다.
