높은 산의 숲속에 나는 여러해살이풀이다. 땅속줄기는 옆으로 길게 뻗고, 줄기에 털이 없거나 돌기 모양의 털이 있다. 줄기는 높이 8~15cm이다. 잎은 2~3장이 어긋나며, 삼각상 심장형, 길이 2~5cm, 너비 1.5~4.0cm, 끝이 뾰족하고, 밑이 심장형, 가장자리에 삼각형 돌기가 있다. 잎 뒷면은 맥 위에 원추형 털이 있다. 잎자루는 있다. 꽃은 5-6월에 흰색으로 피며, 줄기 끝에 20개 정도가 총상꽃차례로 달린다. 꽃차례는 길이 2~3cm이고, 돌기 모양의 털이 있다. 화피는 4장이다. 암술대는 짧고, 암술머리는 얕게 2갈래로 갈라진다. 수술은 4개, 화피보다 짧다. 열매는 장과이고 둥근 모양이며 6-7월에 붉은색으로 익는다. 관상용으로 심는다.
