기러기목 오리과에 속하는 조류로 흔한 겨울철새이다. 몸길이는 약 50cm. 암수 모두 넓적하고 긴 부리가 특징으로 다른 종과 쉽게 구별된다. 넓적한 부리로 물을 걸러 플랑크톤이나 수서곤충 수초 등을 먹는 수면성 오리이다. 수컷은 금속광택의 청록색 머리와 검은색의 등, 흰색의 가슴, 배 부분의 붉은색, 검은색의 넓적한 부리, 주황색 다리로 다른 오리류와 쉽게 구별된다. 변환깃은 선명한 노란색 눈과 밝은색의 날개덮깃으로 암컷과 구별되나 부리의 색은 암컷과 같아진다. 암컷의 눈은 갈색이며 부리는 검은색을 띤 갈색이고 다른 오리류의 암컷과 비슷한 평범한 갈색이나 넓적한 부리로 인해 다른 종과 쉽게 구별된다. 늪지대, 초원, 호수, 저수지에 서식하며 주로 물풀, 물속에 사는 작은 곤충, 플랑크톤 등을 주로 먹는다. 유라시아 대륙의 북부와 북아메리카 북부에서 번식하고 유럽 남부, 북아프리카, 인도, 동남아시아, 중국 남부, 한국, 북아메리카 남부 등에서 월동한다.     유라시아대륙 북부와 북아메리카 북부에서 번식하고, 유럽 남부, 북아프리카, 인도, 동남아시아, 중국 남부, 북아메리카 남부에서 월동한다. [1]

  • 국내에서는 흔한 겨울철새로 전국의 저수지, 하구, 강에 작은 무리를 이루어 서식한다. 수면에서 무리를 지어 뱅글뱅글 원을 그리며 돌면서 파장을 일으킨 후 물 위에 떠 오른 수초, 수서곤충, 플랑크톤 등을 넓고 큰 부리로 좌우로 움직여 걸러 먹는다. [1]
