매목 수리과에 속하는 조류이다. 몸길이는 수컷이 52cm, 암컷이 56cm이고 날개는 122~137cm이다. 날 때 날개 아랫면의 암갈색 점이 특징적으로 보인다. 개체에 따라 깃털 변이가 심하지만, 일반적으로 아랫면은 전체적으로 밝은 갈색으로 보이며, 배와 옆구리, 날개 끝은 어두운 갈색이다. 몸의 윗면은 균일한 어두운 갈색이다. 어미 새의 눈은 어두운 갈색이지만, 어린 새는 노란색을 띤 갈색이다. 경작지, 산림, 숲의 가장자리 등에 살며 양쪽 날개를 약간 들어 각이 완만한 V자형으로 날며, 정지비행도 한다. 주요 먹이는 설치류이지만 곤충류, 양서파충류, 조류도 잡아먹는다. 알은 대개 2~4개를 낳는다. 한국 전역에 도래하는 흔한 통과철새이며 겨울철새이다. 9~10월부터 서해안 도서 지역에서 남하하는 무리를 볼 수 있다. 12월부터 이듬해 2월까지 전국적으로 월동하는 개체를 쉽게 볼 수 있으며, 북상하는 개체를 5월까지 관찰할 수 있다. 유라시아대륙과 아프리카대륙에 폭넓게 분포한다.
