10월부터 이듬해 3월까지 강, 하구, 해안, 간척지 등에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 겨울철새이다. 날개 끝이 검은색이며 흰색의 반점이 있으며, 다리가 분홍색이다. 몸은 전체적으로 흰색이며 등과 날개덮깃은 회색이다. 부리는 노란색이며, 아래쪽에 빨간색 점이 있다. 겨울에는 머리와 목에 갈색의 줄무늬가 있다. 어린 새는 몸 전체가 갈색이며, 일정한 패턴의 세로무늬가 흐릿하고, 꼬리 끝에 검은색 띠가 있다. 강 하구, 바닷가 모래밭에 내려앉아 무리 지어 휴식을 취하는 모습을 관찰할 수 있으며, 바람을 이용해 기류를 타고 이동하기도 한다. 잡식성으로 물고기, 게, 곤충, 바닷새의 알, 수생식물 등을 먹는다.
