몸길이는 약 40cm이다. 날개 윗면은 흐린 회색이다. 날 때 날개의 바깥쪽은 흰색이고, 첫째날개깃 바깥쪽은 검은색이다. 여름깃 머리는 밤색이며, 부리와 다리는 진한 붉은색이다. 겨울깃 머리는 흰색이고, 귀깃 부분에 검은색 반점이 있다. 1년생 겨울깃으로 셋째날개깃과 날개덮깃의 일부는 짙은 갈색이다. 부리와 다리는 적갈색이다. 유사종인 검은머리갈매기는 부리가 짧고 검은색이라 이 종과 구별된다. 날 때 날개 아랫면의 검은 부분이 좁고, 날개 윗면 끝부분의 검은색이 끊어져 있다. 이 종은 드물게 도래하는 통과 철새로 여겨진다. 주로 제주도와 부산에서만 기록되었으며, 남해안 지역에 규칙적으로 도래할 것으로 판단된다. 유럽과 아시아에서 번식하고 온대에서 아열대까지 내려가 겨울을 난다.
