참새목 붉은머리오목눈이과에 속하는 조류이다. 몸 크기는 13cm 정도이다. 몸은 전체적으로 밝은 갈색이며, 날개를 접고 있을 때 적갈색으로 보인다. 배는 황갈색이다. 부리는 짧고 굵으며 전체적으로 흑갈색이지만 끝은 밝게 보인다. 꼬리는 쐐기 모양으로 길다. 초지, 관목, 덤불, 갈밭 등지에서 서식한다. 흔히 번식하는 텃새이다. 수십 마리가 무리 지어 산다. 둥지는 농가의 나무 울타리, 관목림 속 등에 만든다. 4-7월에 3-5개의 알을 낳는다. 주로 곤충을 먹고 거미도 먹는다. 전국에서 흔히 발견되고 중국, 미얀마 등에 분포한다.
