식물체는 원반상 뿌리에서 단독 직립하고, 길이 1~2m다. 줄기는 원주상이고, 표면에 혹 같은 돌기가 있다. 중심가지는 동일 평면상에 우상(羽狀)으로 분지하고, 측지는 편압된 원주상이며, 표면이 매끈하다. 잎은 호생으로 나고, 선상, 우상, 내지 복우상이며, 중륵이 융기한다. 기낭은 타원형이고, 길이 5~10mm, 지름 4~5mm, 가는 선상의 관엽이 있으며, 생식기탁은 첨예한 원주상이고, 가지의 상부에 총상으로 발달하고, 자웅이주이다. 잎과 줄기를 구별하기 어려우며, 줄기 정단부가 특이하게 편압되고, 동일면에 측지를 내는 것이 특징이다. 남해안, 동해안, 제주도, 조간대 하부, 조하대에 서식한다.
