들이나 야산의 활엽수 줄기, 특히 뽕나무에서 발견된다. 성충은 봄~가을 사이에 활동하며 야행성이어서 밤에 불빛에 잘 날아온다. 애벌레는 여러 종류의 활엽수에 기생하나 우리나라에서는 주로 뽕나무에 많다. 몸길이는 35~45mm로 매우 크다. 황토색에 가까운 녹색이며 황색이 많은 회황색 털로 덮여 있다. 앞가슴등판의 양옆에 뾰족한 가시돌기가 있고 딱지날개의 앞쪽에는 알맹이 모양의 작은 돌기들이 있다. 한반도 전역에 서식하며, 세계적으로는 중국, 일본 등지에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]
