날개편길이 48-56mm이다. 앞날개 콩팥 모양 무늬 바깥쪽, 외횡선과 아외연선 사이에서 M2, M3에는 각각 짧고 검은 줄이 있다. 수컷은 앞날개가 연한 회갈색을 띠나 암컷은 짙은 암색을 띤다. 한반도 북부, 중부, 남부, 제주에 분포하고 있다. 국외에는 일본, 중국, 극동러시아, 시베리아, 몽골, 우랄, 러시아 유럽 지역, 유럽, 아프리카, 히말라야산맥 영역, 인도, 인도차이나, 뉴질랜드, 오스트레일리아, 오세아니아, 미국 북부와 남부에 분포한다. 성충은 5-10월에 걸쳐 나타나며 이동 성향이 있다. 때로는 국지적인 다발 현상이 관찰되기도 한다. 유충은 가지, 배추 등 작물에 해를 끼치는 해충이고 연 2-3회 발색하는 것으로 생각된다. 과실의 즙을 빨아 먹기도 한다.
