날개편길이 36-41mm이다. 수컷의 더듬이는 양빗살 모양이며 암컷은 실 모양에 가깝다. 앞날개 무늬는 변화가 많다. 일반적으로 수컷은 앞날개가 회갈색을 띠고 뒷날개는 흰색이나 시맥은 짙은 색을 띤다. 암컷은 수컷에 비해 색이 짙다. 한반도 북부, 중부, 남부, 제주에 분포하고 있다. 국외에는 일본, 중국, 인도, 오스트레일리아, 오세아니아, 극동러시아, 시베리아 남부, 몽골, 카자흐스탄, 우랄, 러시아 유럽 지역, 카프카스, 트랜스코카시아, 유럽, 아프리카에 분포한다. 성충은 4-10월에 걸쳐 2-3회 나타난다. 유충은 소채류나 화훼식물의 주요 해충이다.
