날개편길이 40mm 내외이다. 앞날개는 회갈색 바탕으로 흑색 인편이 산포되며, 콩팥 모양 무늬는 주위가 백색으로 테가 둘러져 있다. 가락지 모양 무늬는 담회갈색이다. 외횡선은 톱니 모양의 흑색 선이 뚜렷하지는 않고, 아외연선은 담황색이다. 외연선은 삼각형의 작은 흑색 점의 열을 이루고 있다. 뒷날개는 암갈색을 띤다. 한반도 북부, 중부, 남부, 제주에 분포하고 있다. 국외에는 일본, 중국, 대만, 인도 북부, 네팔, 극동러시아, 시베리아 남부, 카자흐스탄, 카프카스, 유럽, 터키에 분포한다. 성충은 4~5월과 7~8월에 출현한다. 유충은 뽕나무류, 벚나무, 무궁화, 삼나무, 소나무, 황벽나무, 콩과 식물, 십자화과 식물 등의 잎을 먹는다.
