사니질 연안에 서식하는 어류로 체장은 20cm에 이른다. 체측은 심하게 측편되어 있으며 체형은 긴 사상구조이다. 두부 등 쪽과 체측 등 쪽의 체색은 연청색이며, 체측과 복부는 은백색이다. 모든 지느러미는 투명하며, 꼬리지느러미 외연은 연회색이거나 약간 검다. 등지느러미 기저 시점은 체측 중앙보다 현저한 전방에 위치한다. 등지느러미 부분의 체고가 가장 높다. 가슴지느러미는 체측의 복부 쪽에 위치한다. 가슴지느러미의 6연조는 긴 사상으로 뒷지느러미 기저 시점을 훨씬 지나고, 비사상연조가 아닌 연조는 배지느러미 기저를 지난다. 배지느러미는 등지느러미 기저 시점과 동일한 위치에 있으며, 복부에 있다. 배지느러미 기저상부에 부속비늘이 있다. 항문은 뒷지느러미 전방에 있다. 뒷지느러미는 꼬리지느러미와 융합되어 있으며, 뒷지느러미 기저는 매우 길다. 꼬리지느러미는 첨형으로, 중앙의 연조가 가장 길다. 주둥이 전방의 상악은 하악보다 전방에 있다. 상악은 매우 길어서 가슴지느러미 기저에 이른다. 상악에 작은 거치가 있다. 상악과 하악에 작은 이빨이 있다. 비늘은 원린이며 체측 전체에 덮여 있다. 측선은 없다. 복부에 인판열이 있어 복부능선(keel)을 형성한다. 산란기는 4월부터 6월 사이에 주로 이루어진다. 산란장소는 강 하구에서 소상하여 강 중류 지역에서 이루어진다. 군산, 목포, 여수, 진해, 부산에 서식하며, 세계적으로는 일본, 중국, 대만에 분포한다.
