분류체계
강 하구, 연안 주변에 서식하는 식용 가능한 어류로 체장은 150cm에 이른다. 몸 전체는 측편되어 있으며, 몸 형태는 긴 유선형이다. 몸 전체의 체색은 밝은 은색이다. 두부와 체측의 등 쪽은 회색에 가까운 은색이다. 등지느러미의 전반부, 꼬리지느러미 상엽의 전반부와 하엽의 하반부는 진회색이다. 가슴지느러미, 배지느러미 및 뒷지느러미는 투명하다. 등지느러미는 체측 중앙부에 위치한다. 가슴지느러미는 체측 하단부의 복측면에 위치한다. 배지느러미는 등지느러미 기저 후단에 위치한다. 뒷지느러미는 미병부와 인접하여 있다. 꼬리지느러미는 정형이며, 상하엽이 길게 발달되어 있다. 주둥이 전방의 상악은 하악보다 약간 전방에 있다. 상악 후단은 안경의 전방에 이르거나 약간 지난다. 전비공과 후비공 사이에 육질 격막이 있다. 안경주변에 지검이 발달되어 있다. 양 아가미는 협부에서 서로 연결되어 있다. 비늘은 원린이며, 두부를 제외한 체측에 비늘이 덮여 있다. 측선은 완전하며 아가미 후단부터 미병부까지 일직선이다. 미병부에 2개의 큰 비늘이 있다. 가슴지느러미와 배지느러미 기저위는 큰 부속비늘이 1개 있다. 양악에 이빨이 없다. 부안에 서식하며, 세계적으로는 지중해, 대서양 및 서아프리카를 제외한 전 세계에 분포한다.
