가자미목 가자미과에 속하는 어류이다. 몸길이가 30cm 정도이다. 몸 모양은 납작하고 마름모꼴에 가깝다. 두 눈은 몸의 오른쪽에 모여 있는데 그사이가 볼록하고 입은 뾰족하다. 몸 전체에 흑갈색 반점이 산재하고, 꼬리지느러미 뒷부분은 검다. 눈이 없는 쪽은 흰색이다. 수심 100m 미만의 모래나 개펄 바닥에 납작하게 붙어서 헤엄쳐 다닌다. 소형 연체류, 갑각류, 갯지렁이류를 잡아먹는다. 가을에서 겨울 사이에 여러 번에 걸쳐 산란한다. 우리나라 전 연안에 출현하며, 일본 홋카이도 이남, 타이완, 동중국해에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]
