햇빛이 잘 드는 개울가, 논, 습지 등에 자라는 한해 또는 두해살이풀이다. 전체에 털이 없고, 윤기가 난다. 줄기는 높이 10~50cm, 가지가 갈라지기도 한다. 뿌리잎은 잎자루가 길고, 3갈래로 깊게 갈라진다. 줄기잎은 어긋나며, 위로 갈수록 잎자루가 짧아지고, 위쪽의 것은 완전히 3갈래로 갈라지며, 갈라진 조각은 피침형이다. 꽃은 4~6월에 피는데 가지 끝에서 길이 1~2.5cm의 꽃자루에 1개씩 달리며, 지름 0.8~1cm, 노란색이다. 꽃받침잎은 5장, 타원형, 뒤로 젖혀진다. 꽃잎은 5장, 도란형, 꽃받침과 비슷한 크기이다. 열매는 수과, 타원상 원주형으로 모여 달리며, 7~8월에 결실한다. 우리나라 중부 이남에 나며, 북반구에 넓게 분포한다. 젓가락나물과 비슷하지만, 전체에 털이 없고, 여러해살이풀이 아니므로 다르다. 독성이 있으며, 늪바구지, 습바구지라고도 한다.
