높은 산 풀밭에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧추서며, 높이 40~150cm, 털이 없다. 뿌리잎은 잎자루가 길고 줄기잎은 잎자루가 없다. 잎몸은 원심형으로 길이 5.5~9.5cm, 폭 10~15cm, 3~5갈래로 깊이 갈라지고, 결각상 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 7~8월에 피는데 가지와 줄기 끝에서 1개씩 달리며, 지름 3.5~4.5cm, 노란색이다. 꽃받침잎은 5~7장, 난형, 길이 1.5~2.5cm, 폭 1.2~1.5cm, 가장자리는 물결 모양이다. 꽃잎은 8~22장, 선형, 길이 2~3.5cm로 꽃받침잎보다 길다. 수술은 많으며, 꽃밥은 길이 3.5~4mm이다. 암술은 20~40개이다. 열매는 골돌과이고, 9~10월에 익는다. 한반도 북부지방에 자생하며, 러시아 사할린, 우수리, 몽골, 일본, 중국 동북부 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 금매화와 애기금매화에 비해 꽃잎은 꽃받침보다 길므로 구분된다. 관상용으로 식재한다.
