분류체계
조록나무목 버즘나무과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 길가에 가로수로 드물게 심어 기르는 낙엽 큰키나무로 높이 30m쯤 자란다. 나무껍질은 큰 조각으로 떨어지고 암회색 또는 회백색으로 얼룩진 것처럼 보인다. 잎자루는 길이 3~8cm, 아랫부분이 겨울눈을 완전히 싸고 있다. 잎은 어긋나며 넓은 난상 원형으로 5~7갈래로 깊게 갈라지고, 폭 10~20cm, 밑부분이 넓게 뾰족하거나 잘린 모양이다. 중앙 갈래는 길이가 폭보다 길고 톱니가 드문드문 있거나 밋밋하다. 꽃은 5월에 핀다. 열매는 구과로 둥글며, 2~6개가 긴 열매자루에 달려 있고 구과의 윗부분이 뾰족하여 표면에 돌기가 많은 것처럼 보인다. 우리나라 각지에서 식재하며, 아시아 유럽에 분포한다. 양버즘나무와 비교하여 나무껍질이 벗겨져 떨어지기 쉽고, 잎은 갈래가 더 깊게 갈라지며, 턱잎이 작고, 열매의 수과가 많으며 끝이 뾰족한 것이 다르다. 버짐나무, 프라타나스, 플라타너스, 플라탄나무라고도 부른다. 서남아시아 및 유럽 원산이다.
