남해안 섬에 드물게 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 뿌리는 굵다. 줄기는 높이 80-150cm이며, 가지가 갈라진다. 잎은 어긋나며, 타원형, 길이 10-30cm, 너비 5-15cm, 끝은 뾰족하고, 밑은 쐐기 모양, 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 잎 뒷면은 연한 녹색, 잎줄이 깃 모양으로 발달한다. 꽃은 줄기와 가지 끝에서 총상꽃차례로 피며, 흰색 또는 연한 분홍색이다. 꽃차례는 길이 5-12cm이다. 꽃받침은 5장으로 꽃잎처럼 보이며, 꽃잎은 없다. 수술은 보통 8개, 꽃밥은 연한 분홍색이다. 암술대는 보통 8개, 서로 떨어져 있다. 열매이삭은 똑바로 서거나 조금 늘어지기도 한다. 열매는 장과이며, 검게 익는다. 전국 내륙에서도 자리공을 볼 수 있는데, 이것을 귀화식물로 보는 견해가 있다. 세계적으로 일본과 대만에도 분포한다.
