분류체계
중국 원산이며 정원, 공원에 조경수로 식재하는 낙엽 큰키나무다. 줄기는 높이 10~20m가량 자라고, 가지는 녹색이다. 잎은 어긋나지만 가지 끝에서 모여난 것처럼 보이며, 끝이 3~5갈래로 갈라지고, 넓은 난형, 길이와 폭이 16~22cm, 밑이 심장형이다. 잎자루는 길이 15~20cm다. 꽃은 6~7월에 노란빛이 도는 녹색으로 피며, 가지 끝에서 원추꽃차례를 이루고 한 꽃차례에 암꽃과 수꽃이 함께 달린다. 꽃차례는 길이 25~50cm다. 꽃자루는 길이 2~3mm다. 꽃받침잎은 5장, 긴 타원형, 길이 1cm쯤, 밑으로 젖혀진다. 꽃잎은 없다. 열매는 골돌과, 분과 5개가 모여서 되며, 종자는 5~7mm의 구형이며 겉면이 쭈글쭈글하다. 10월에 익는데 그 전에 벌어진다. 우리나라 중부 이남에서 식재하며, 일본 오키나와, 중국, 타이완, 남아시아, 인도차이나 등에 분포한다. 불암초에 비해 목본이며, 꽃은 단성, 꽃잎은 없고 열매는 성숙하기 전에 벌어지며, 종자는 심피에 몇 개씩 들어 있으므로 구분된다. 관상용으로 심고, 목재는 기구재, 나무껍질은 섬유용, 종자는 차로 마신다.
