분류체계
유럽 원산의 귀화식물이며 관상용 및 약용으로 재배하거나, 길가, 빈터에 야생화하여 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧게 자라며 높이 10~40cm, 위쪽에서 가지가 갈라지며 털이 있거나 없다. 뿌리잎은 없다. 줄기잎은 어긋나며 잎자루가 거의 없다. 잎몸은 주걱형 또는 도피침형으로 길이 2~6cm, 폭 5~15mm, 가장자리는 깃꼴로 갈라지거나 톱니 모양 또는 밋밋하다. 꽃은 6~8월에 분홍색 또는 보라색으로 피며, 총상꽃차례에 달린다. 꽃받침잎은 타원형으로 길이 1.5~3.0mm이다. 꽃잎은 4장, 이 중 안쪽 2장은 길이 2~5mm, 바깥쪽 2장은 길이 5~8mm이다. 열매는 넓은 난형으로 길이 4~6mm, 폭 3~6mm이다. 씨는 길이 2~3mm, 좁은 날개가 있다. 우리나라 전역, 아시아와 아메리카에 귀화하여 분포한다. 말냉이는 꽃이 흰색으로 피며, 열매가 편평한 타원형이고 넓은 날개가 있으므로 다르다. 관상용으로 심으며, 전초를 약용한다.
