분류체계
유럽과 북아시아 원산이며 도로변에 자라는 한해 또는 두해살이풀로 귀화식물이다. 줄기는 곧게 자라거나 다소 비스듬히 자라며 높이 20~70cm, 전체에 거센털이 있다. 뿌리잎은 잎자루가 길며 잎몸은 타원형, 난형 또는 피침형으로 길이 3~15cm, 폭 1~5cm로 가장자리는 톱니 모양 또는 깃꼴로 갈라진다. 줄기 위쪽 잎은 잎자루가 짧거나 거의 없으며, 잎몸은 타원형 또는 난형으로 가장자리는 톱니 모양이다. 꽃은 5~6월에 총상꽃차례에 연한 노란색으로 핀다. 꽃받침은 좁은 타원형으로 길이 7~11mm, 듬성하게 털이 있다. 꽃잎은 노란색 또는 연한 노란색으로 어두운 갈색 또는 보라색 맥이 있고, 길이 15~25mm, 폭 4~7mm이다. 열매는 기둥 모양으로 길이 2~11cm, 폭 3~8mm, 3~8개의 씨가 들어 있으며, 마르면 씨와 씨 사이가 잘록해진다. 씨는 타원형 또는 난형으로 길이 3mm쯤이다. 유럽과 북아시아 원산으로 우리나라에는 인천, 경기 안산 등지에서 자라고, 북아메리카에 귀화하여 분포한다. 무는 꽃이 분홍색 또는 보라색이고 뿌리가 육질로 되지만, 서양무아재비는 꽃이 연한 노란색으로 피고 뿌리가 육질로 되지 않고, 열매의 마디가 잘록해지므로 다르다. 잎과 뿌리를 식용하고, 뿌리는 기관지염에 약용하며, 소화제의 약재로 쓴다.
