분류체계
북아메리카가 원산이며 조경용으로 식재하는 낙엽 큰키나무로 키 10m쯤 자란다. 잎은 어긋나며, 난형 또는 도란상 긴 타원형이고, 끝이 뾰족하며, 길이 8~15cm, 불규칙하고 둔한 톱니가 있고, 표면에 주름이 있으며, 털이 없다. 꽃은 5월에 피는데 흰색이며, 산형꽃차례에 3~5송이씩 달리고, 지름 2.5~3.5cm이며, 꽃자루의 길이는 4cm쯤이다. 열매는 핵과이고, 원형 또는 난상 원형이며, 지름 2.5cm쯤이고, 6~7월에 적색으로 익는다. 우리나라 각지에서 식재하며, 북아메리카에 분포한다. 양벚나무와 유사하나 잎에 전혀 털이 없고 꽃받침잎이 뒤로 젖혀지지 않으며 열매가 적색으로 익고 신맛이 강한 점이 다르다. 조경용으로 식재며, 열매를 식용한다. 신벗나무, 큰양벗나무라고도 부른다.
