산기슭이나 산골짜기에서 높이 10m 정도로 자라는 큰키나무이다. 나무껍질은 흑갈색으로 그물처럼 갈라지고 어린가지는 연갈색이고 부드러운 털이 있으나 점차 없어진다. 잎은 마주나며, 길이 1~3cm의 잎자루가 있으며, 잎몸은 넓은 난형 또는 타원형이고 끝은 점차 뾰족해지고 밑부분은 둥글거나 넓은 쐐기 모양이며, 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 잎 앞면은 진녹색으로 짧은 센털이 있고, 뒷면은 연녹색 또는 흰색을 띠며 짧은 센털이 많다. 측맥은 4~5쌍이다. 꽃은 5~6월에 피는데 가지 끝에서 취산꽃차례에 달린다. 꽃대 길이 1.5~2.5cm, 짧은 센털이 있다. 꽃받침은 길이 1.5mm, 흰 털이 빽빽하다. 꽃잎은 4장, 타원형, 길이 약 5mm, 흰색이다. 수술은 꽃잎과 길이가 거의 같다. 암술은 끝이 굵어져 곤봉 모양이다. 열매는 핵과, 둥글고 10월에 검게 익는다. 우리나라 전역에 자생하며, 중국 만주에도 분포한다. 곰의말채나무에 비해 측맥이 4~5쌍으로 적고, 꽃차례는 위가 편평하므로 구분된다. 가로수, 정원수로 심고, 목재를 가구재나 기구재로 쓰고, 나무껍질을 이뇨 및 지사제로 쓴다. 조선층층나무라고도 부른다.
