분류체계
대극목 대극과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 멕시코 원산이며 관상용으로 정원, 온실, 화단 등에 심어 기르는 상록성 떨기나무이다. 높이는 0.5~3.0m이다. 가지는 굵으며, 윗부분에서 갈라지고 자르면 유액이 나온다. 잎은 어긋나며, 넓은 피침형이고 끝은 뾰족하다. 가지와 원줄기 끝의 잎은 피침형으로 가장자리는 매끈하며, 진한 주홍색을 띠고 있어 꽃처럼 보인다. 꽃은 가지 끝에 10개씩 모여 달린다. 모인꽃싸개는 종 모양으로 황록색을 띤다. 꽃과 열매는 8월에서 이듬해 4월까지 형성된다. 정원, 화단 등에 관상용으로 식재한다. 우리나라 전역 및 전 세계에서 식재한다. 원산지 멕시코에 분포한다.
