분류체계
북아메리카 북동부가 원산지이며 공원, 정원 등에 관상용으로 식재하는 낙엽 활엽 큰키나무이다. 잎은 마주나고, 손바닥 모양의 원형이며, 3~5갈래로 갈라지고, 지름 8~14cm이다. 잎끝은 뾰족하고 밑은 심장형이며, 양면에 털이 없고, 뒷면은 연한 녹색이며, 가장자리는 밋밋하거나 이 모양의 톱니가 드문드문 있다. 가을에 황적색으로 물든다. 꽃은 4~5월에 피는데 잡성화로 황록색이며, 가지 끝에 산방꽃차례로 달린다. 화축은 매우 짧고 꽃자루는 길며 꽃잎은 없다. 열매는 시과, 5월에 익는데 날개의 각은 예각이며 털이 없다. 우리나라 각지에서 식재하며, 북아메리카 북동부에 분포한다. 관상용으로 식재하며, 수액에서 설탕 메이플 시럽을 추출한다. 목재는 가구재로 쓰인다.
