산골짜기에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 키는 80~150cm이다. 잎집에만 털이 있고 뿌리잎과 줄기 밑부분의 잎은 잎자루가 길며 삼각형이고 삼각상 넓은 난형이며 4회 3출겹잎이다. 작은잎은 난형, 피침형이고 길이 3~6cm이며 3갈래로 갈라지기도 하고 끝이 뾰족하며 결각 모양의 톱니가 있고 잎자루는 흰색이며 긴 타원형의 잎집이 발달한다. 꽃은 8~9월에 피는데 흰색이고 큰 겹산형꽃차례를 이룬다. 작은 산형꽃차례는 20~40개이고 모인꽃싸개잎은 5개이며 선형이다. 열매는 분과이고 납작한 타원형이며 양 끝이 오목하고 털이 없다. 유관은 3개이다. 9~10월에 익는다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 일본, 중국 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 왜천궁과 유사하나, 중앙 작은잎의 잎자루가 뒤로 젖혀지지 않는 점에서 구분된다. 뿌리를 두통, 빈혈, 월경불순 등에 약용한다. 개강활, 백봉궁궁이, 백봉천궁이라고도 한다.
