분류체계
유럽 원산의 원예식물로 심어 기르던 것이 야생으로 퍼져나가 들이나 풀밭에서 여러해살이풀로 자라는 귀화식물이다. 땅속줄기는 옆으로 뻗는다. 줄기는 곧추서고 높이 60~100cm이며, 거미줄 같은 털이 난다. 잎은 어긋나며, 2회 깃꼴로 갈라진다. 줄기 아래쪽의 잎은 잎자루가 길다. 줄기 중간 이상의 잎은 잎자루가 없으며, 길이 6~9cm이다. 꽃은 6~9월에 피는데 줄기 끝에서 머리모양꽃차례가 산방상으로 달리며, 흰색 또는 연한 붉은색이다. 혀모양꽃은 5개로 암꽃이며, 끝이 3갈래로 얕게 갈라진다. 관모양꽃은 양성꽃이며, 끝이 5갈래로 갈라진다. 모인꽃싸개는 원통형이며, 조각이 3줄로 붙는다. 열매는 수과, 긴 타원형이며 털이 없고 9~10월에 익는다. 우리나라 전역, 북반구 온대에 널리 귀화하여 분포한다. 우리나라에 자생하는 톱풀속 식물들에 비해서 잎은 2회 깃꼴로 가늘게 갈라지며, 아래쪽 잎에는 잎자루가 있으므로 구분된다. 관상용, 약용한다.
