분류체계
유럽 원산의 귀화식물이며 도로변에서 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 줄기는 여러 대가 나오고 높이 20~60cm이며, 마디는 3~4개 있다. 아래쪽의 잎집에는 털이 있다. 잎몸은 길이 4~12cm이고, 너비 2~5mm이다. 잎혀는 막질이고 길이 0.5mm 정도이다. 꽃은 6~7월에 피는데 전체 꽃차례는 6~11cm이고, 줄기에 작은이삭이 두 줄로 이삭꽃차례 모양으로 달린다. 작은이삭은 납작하고 길이 10~14mm이다. 두 포영은 모양과 크기가 같고 길이 9~11mm이고, 가장자리의 굵은 맥 하나가 길이 9~11mm의 까락으로 길어진다. 호영은 길이 9~11mm이고, 바깥쪽 윗부분에서 2~3cm의 까락이 돋는다. 내영은 호영과 같은 길이이며 맥이 두 개 있고, 윗부분 가장자리에 털이 있다. 우리나라 경기도에 자라며, 유럽과 중앙아시아 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 자루가 없는 작은이삭이 꽃차례에 직접 달리는 특징이 밀속과 같아서 밀속으로 취급된 적도 있지만, 꽃차례 폭이 좁고, 포영의 용골이 크게 두드러지지 않는 점이 다르다.
