중동지역 원산의 귀화식물이며 바닷가 습지나 초원에서 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 땅속줄기는 길게 뻗고, 줄기는 곧게 선다. 높이는 80~180cm이며, 7~9개의 마디가 있다. 잎집은 마디 간격보다 약간 짧다. 잎몸은 길이 20~60cm이고, 너비 10~20mm이다. 잎혀는 0.5~1.0mm이고 끝에 긴 털이 난다. 꽃은 7~9월에 피는데 전체 꽃차례는 가지가 마디에서 돌려나 원추형을 이루고, 길이는 20~50cm이다. 작은이삭은 자루가 있는 것과 없는 것이 쌍으로 달리며, 자루가 있는 것은 수꽃이 들어 있고 없는 것은 양성화가 들어 있다. 자루가 없는 작은이삭은 길이 4~5mm이고, 포영은 광택이 있다. 호영은 1.0~1.6cm의 까락이 돋고, 까락은 꼬이고 중간에서 꺾인다. 우리나라 서울, 경기도, 전라도, 제주도 등에 자라며, 일본, 남유럽, 북아메리카 등에 귀화하여 분포한다. 수수새에 비해 줄기의 마디에 털이 없고, 양성화의 호영 까락이 상대적으로 짧아 구분된다. 양성화의 호영에 까락이 없는 것을 무망시리아수수새로 구분하기도 한다.
