분류체계
관상용으로 화분에 심어 기르는 여러해살이풀이다. 잎은 밑에서 서로 감싸며 비늘줄기처럼 되고, 16~20개가 나란히 붙으며, 길이 45cm, 폭 5cm쯤, 다소 뒤로 말린다. 잎 양면은 짙은 녹색으로 윤기가 난다. 꽃은 3월에 피는데 연한 붉은색, 꽃부리 입구는 노란색이며, 잎 사이에서 올라온 꽃줄기 끝에 12~20개가 모여 산형꽃차례를 이룬다. 화피조각은 6개, 바깥조각이 안조각보다 좁고, 뒷면 가운데 부분이 녹색이다. 수술은 6개다. 열매는 장과, 길이 2.5cm쯤이고, 붉게 익는다. 남아프리카 원산으로 우리나라 각지에서 심어 기르며 남아프리카에 분포한다. 이 종은 문주란속 식물에 비해 화피통이 화피조각보다 짧고 뒤로 말리지 않으므로 구분된다.
