고래목 수염고래과에 속하는 포유류이다. 지구상의 동물 중 가장 대형이다. 성체는 암컷이 수컷보다 조금 크며 몸길이 23~27m, 성체의 몸무게는 160톤에 이른다. 몸의 형태는 가늘고 긴 유선형이다. 몸 빛깔은 청회색이다. 머리는 위에서 보면 폭이 넓고 U자형을 이룬다. 가슴지느러미는 길고 뾰족하다. 등지느러미는 비교적 작다. 목에서 배꼽 또는 그 부근까지 55~88개의 주름이 나 있다. 입에는 길이 1m 정도의 수염판이 270~395개 있다. 물기둥은 가늘고 높으며 높이는 9m 이상 이른다. 대개 단독으로 또는 2마리로 활동하나, 10마리 전후 또는 그 이상의 무리가 관찰되기도 한다. 크릴이 가장 중요한 먹이원으로 하루 4천만 마리(약 3.6t)의 크릴을 먹는다. 남획으로 절멸 직전에 이르렀으나 국제포경위원회의 보호 노력으로 최근 개체수가 증가하고 있다. 우리나라 전 해역에 출현 가능성이 있으며, 전 세계 대양에서 관찰된다. 대개 단독 또는 2마리로 활동하나, 주요 번식해역에서는 10마리 전후 또는 그 이상의 무리가 관찰되기도 한다. 짧은 잠수가 대부분이지만 15~20초 간격의 몇 차례 수면 위로 머리를 드러낸 이후 30분 이상 잠수를 한 사례도 기록되어 있다. 꼬리지느러미를 수면 위로 드러내는 일은 드물지 않지만 흰긴수염고래 전부가 꼬리지느러미를 수면 위로 드러내지는 않는다. 새끼는 겨울철에 열대에서 아열대 번식해역에서 태어난다. 먹이를 섭취하는 해역에서는 구름처럼 떼 지어 있는 새우 무리에 다양한 모습으로 돌진하여 먹이를 먹는 것이 관찰된다. 연안 새우류가 가장 중요한 먹이원이다.
