솔피
고래목 돌고래과에 속하는 포유류이다. 성체의 몸길이는 암컷 8.5m, 수컷 9.8m이고, 체중은 암컷 7.5톤, 수컷 10톤에 이른다. 등 위로 높게 솟아오른 삼각형 모양의 등지느러미가 이 종의 특징으로 수컷의 경우 1.8m나 된다. 주둥이는 매우 짧고 앞이 둥글다. 가슴지느러미는 크고 알처럼 둥근 모양을 이룬다. 성체 수컷의 경우 크기가 2m에 이른다. 10~12개의 굽은 이빨이 좌우상하 턱에 있다. 눈 위 후방에 희고 둥근 큰 반점이 있다. 등은 검은색이며 몸 아래는 흰색이다. 정주 그룹과 이동 그룹의 두 유형이 있다. 정주 그룹은 주로 물고기를 먹고, 이동 그룹은 해양성 포유류를 주식으로 한다. 범고래는 안정된 사회를 형성하고 있는 것으로 유명하다. 돌고래, 물범 등 다른 해양 포유동물, 펭귄 등 조류, 어류 등을 포식한다. 바다에서 살지만 때로는 강을 거슬러 올라가기도 한다. 우리나라 전 해역에 출현 가능성이 있으며, 전 세계 해역에 분포한다. 평생 같은 지역에서 생활하는 그룹과 다른 지역을 오가며 이동하는 그룹이 있다. 이 두 그룹 사이에는 생태학적인 차이뿐만 아니라 형태 및 몸의 색에도 차이가 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 정주그룹은 주로 물고기를 먹고, 이동그룹은 해양성 포유류를 주식으로 한다. 사회적인 동물로 특히 미국 워싱턴주의 정주형 범고래그룹은 사람 다음으로 안정된 사회를 형성하고 있는 것으로 유명하다. 각각의 개체는 평생 태어나서 자란 지역에서만 거주한다. 많은 경우 1~55마리로 무리를 이루며 정주그룹이 이동그룹보다 개체수가 많다. 태평양 북서부에서는 출산은 10월부터 3월에 걸쳐 이루어지며, 대서양 북동부에서는 늦가을부터 한 겨울에 걸쳐 이루어진다. 돌고래, 물범 등 다른 해양 포유동물, 펭귄 등 조류, 어류 등을 먹는다.
