조하대 상부에 나는 대롱편모조류이다. 엽상체는 높이 1-2m이지만 5m까지 자라기도 한다. 부착기는 지름 2cm, 줄기는 길이 1cm 정도이다. 중심가지는 줄기에서 나선상으로 발달하고, 측지가 많이 발달한다. 잎은 중심가지 하부에서 아래쪽을 향하고, 장타원형 또는 피침상이다. 연중 생육하며 겨울에서 봄에 번식한다. 동해안과 남해안에 나며, 중국, 일본, 필리핀, 파키스탄 등지에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]

    자산어보 길이 2-3자쯤 되고, 줄기의 굵기는 힘줄과 같다. 줄기에서는 가지가 나고 가지에서는 또 곁가지가 나고, 곁가지에서 또 무수히 가느다란 가지가 나 있으며 그 가지 끝에 이파리가 나 있는데, 그 이파리의 천사만루가 곱고 부드러우며 나약하고 섬세하다. 그 뿌리를 뽑아 거꾸러 걸어놓으면 흡사 수천 가지가 늘어진 버드나무와 같다. 색깔은 검다. 고동조(高動藻)와 기름조(其廩藻) 해조는 데쳐먹기도 하고 국을 끓여 먹기도 한다. 태양조(太陽藻)는 먹어서는 안되는데 10월에 묵은 뿌리에서 돋아나 6-7월에 떨어지는 것을 거두어 말려서 보리밭의 거름으로 사용한다. 거름 비공개
