두루미목 두루미과의 새이다. 몸이 비대하고 목과 다리가 길고 크다. 직립하면 높이 1.2m 정도이고, 날개길이는 2m가량이다. 몸 전체가 균일한 회색빛을 띠고, 뺨은 흰색이며, 정수리는 털이 없고 빨간색이다. 날 때는 목을 쭉 뻗고, 아래로 내려갈 때는 느리고 위로 오를 때는 날갯짓을 빠르게 하는 등으로 다른 새들과 구별된다. 수컷이 암컷보다 약간 큰 것을 제외하고는 암수 생김새가 비슷하다. 대부분 젖은 풀밭, 늪, 소택지 같은 넓은 초원에 보금자리를 튼다. 인가에서 멀리 떨어진 곳을 선호한다. 밤에는 휴식을 취하기 위해 큰 습지에 집합한다. 일부일처제이다. 해마다 함께 남아 번식하고, 구애함으로써 가까운 관계를 유지하고, 조화를 이루어 서로를 부른다. 봄에 이동하는 동안 짝짓기를 한다. 주행성이고, 부분적으로 철새이다. 남부에 사는 종은 연중 내내 머무는 것에 반해 북부에 사는 종은 겨울 동안 남쪽으로 이동한다. 1쌍 또는 가족이 모여 있는 것이 발견된다. 이동 중에는 농경지에서 농작물을 먹는 것을 종종 볼 수 있다. 미국 플로리다, 캐나다 등지에 분포한다.
