우리나라에는 드문 겨울철새로 몸길이 약 38cm이다. 귀깃이 길며, 눈은 주황색이다. 몸의 윗면은 누런 갈색과 짙은 갈색으로 얼룩져 있고, 아랫배에는 가로줄이 섞인 굵은 세로 줄무늬가 있다. 야행성 조류이고 주로 소나무 숲에서 무리 지어 겨울을 난다. 번식기는 5월 중순에서 하순이며 둥지는 잡목 숲속에 있는 매나 말똥가리 등의 옛 둥지를 이용한다. 한배 산란 수는 4-6개이다. 포란은 암컷이 하며, 수컷은 암컷에게 먹이를 공급한다. 들쥐, 작은 들새, 곤충을 먹는다. 유럽, 시베리아 남부, 내몽골, 중국 북동부, 일본 등지의 구북구 한대와 온대에 분포하며 겨울에는 중국 남부나 인도 북부, 이란 등지로 내려가 겨울을 난다. 천연기념물 제324호로 지정되어 있다. 우리나라 전역에 분포하는 것으로 알려져 있으며, 드물게 서식하는 것으로 추정된다. [2]

번식기는 5월 중순에서 하순이며 둥지는 잡목 숲속에 있는 매나 말똥가리 등의 옛 둥지를 이용한다. 한배 산란 수는 4~6개이며, 알은 흰색이다. 포란기간은 26~28일이며, 육추기간은 23~24일이다. 포란은 암컷이 하며, 수컷은 암컷에게 먹이를 운반한다. 주로 들쥐를 먹으며, 작은 들새, 곤충도 먹는다(문화재청 2009). [2]
