부식질이 많은 풀 위나 땅 위에서 속생 또는 군생한다. 갓은 지름 10.0-20.0cm로, 장난형에서 종형이 된다. 갓 표면은 담회색에서 담황갈색으로, 거친 섬유상 인편으로 덮여 있다. 가장자리는 방사상 홈선으로 갈라진다. 주름살은 흰색에서 검은색이 되며, 가장자리부터 액화되어 후에는 대만 남는다. 주름의 폭은 빽빽하고 끝붙은형이다. 대는 크기 15.0-25.0×1.0-2.0cm로, 표면은 흰색이다. 턱받이는 흰색의 막질이며, 종종 탈락한다. 포자는 타원형으로, 평활하며, 크기는 12.0-15.0×7.0-8.0㎛이다. 우리나라를 포함한 세계 전역에 분포한다.
