Coccinella axyridis Pallas, 1773

딱정벌레목 무당벌레과에 속하는 곤충이다. 몸은 길이 5~8mm이며, 둥근 원형이고, 색깔은 주로 주황색 또는 주홍색을 띠며 검은색을 띤 개체도 있다. 앞가슴등판의 양옆은 둥글고 흰색이며, 가운데는 검은색 또는 띠 모양의 검은 무늬가 있다. 등 쪽의 무늬는 변이가 매우 심한데, 일반적으로 주황색 또는 주홍색으로 검은 점들이 나 있거나 간혹 없는 개체도 있다. 몸 전체는 검은색에 노란색 또는 주홍색의 큰 반점을 지니고 있다. 우리나라 무당벌레류 중에서 가장 흔한 종으로 진딧물을 먹고 사는 매우 유익한 곤충이다. 성충으로 무리를 지어 월동한다. 전국에 서식하며, 세계적으로 러시아, 일본, 중국, 타이완 등지에 분포한다.
