몸길이는 12.5~18.5mm가량이다. 머리, 더듬이, 딱지날개, 넓적다리마디 말단, 넓적다리마디, 발목마디는 검은색이다. 앞가슴등판, 작은방패판, 가운뎃가슴, 뒷가슴, 제5, 6마디를 제외한 복부, 검은색의 말단을 제외한 넓적다리마디는 노란색이고, 제5, 6배마디는 연노란색이다. 수컷의 머리는 앞가슴등판에 덮여 있다. 눈은 상대적으로 볼록하고 크다. 더듬이는 톱니 모양이며, 상대적으로 짧다. 앞가슴등판은 반원형이며, 폭은 길이보다 더 길다. 딱지날개는 양 측연이 평행하며, 표면에는 주름 모양의 점각이 있다. 복부는 일곱 마디로 되어 있다. 제5, 6배마디에 발광기가 있다. 암컷의 머리는 검은색이며, 더듬이, 넓적다리마디, 발목마디는 황갈색이다. 앞가슴등판은 노란색이나 중앙부위는 황적색이다. 몸은 수컷에 비해 크고, 눈은 작다. 더듬이는 짧다. 딱지날개는 매우 짧다. 뒷날개는 없다. 산기슭의 풀숲, 깨끗한 개울가, 논 등에서 주로 활동한다. 성충은 8~10월에 출현한다. 한국(강원도, 경기도, 경상북도, 충청북도, 전라남북도, 제주도), 중국(저장), 일본 등지에 분포한다. 수컷은 땅의 표면이나 풀줄기에서 불빛을 내는 암컷에게 날아와 짝짓기를 한다. 애벌레는 습기가 많은 숲에서 달팽이나 고동류를 잡아먹고 산다. [2]
